If you’re thinking about making a move and looking for a city that’s rich in history, culture, food, and more, Baltimore should be at the top of your list. Affectionately known as Charm City, Baltimore has so much to offer, whether you are looking for a quiet neighborhood, a neighborhood with nightlife within walking distance, or one with unique architecture and charm--Baltimore has it all. Check out my top reasons why a move to Baltimore should be in your future!
1. Affordable Cost of Living
One of the standout reasons to move to Baltimore is its affordable cost of living. Compared to neighboring cities (hint hint...DC) and the state of Maryland itself, Baltimore offers great value. The 2023 median sold price in Baltimore is $261,664 while other nearby cities are well above that:
Annapolis, MD: $770,794
Washington, DC: $829,925
Philadelphia, PA: $323,973
Wilmington, DE: $347,158
Alexandria, VA: $681,762
You’ll also find housing costs, utilities, and daily expenses are more reasonable, allowing you to enjoy a high quality of life without breaking the bank.
2. Prime Location
Baltimore’s strategic location on the East Coast makes it an ideal place for those who love to travel or need to commute. Washington, D.C. is less than an hour away, making it perfect for day trips or business commutes. On top of that, Baltimore is connected to DC's Union Station via the MARC train, which takes less than hour from station-to-station. New York City is just a three-hour drive, allowing you to enjoy the best of both worlds—proximity to major metropolitan areas without the hustle and bustle (or cost) of living there.
One of my other favorite things about Baltimore's location is that you are 2-3 hours from the Maryland & Delaware beaches and only 2-3 hours from the mountains in Maryland and Virginia.
3. Booming Job Market
Baltimore boasts a diverse and thriving job market. The city is a hub for several industries, including healthcare, education, finance, and technology. The presence of top institutions like Johns Hopkins University and Medical Hospital adds to the city’s robust employment landscape. Additionally, the tech startup scene is growing, offering exciting opportunities for innovation and career growth. Baltimore’s proximity to D.C. also means there are plenty of government and defense contracting positions available both in DC and surrounding Baltimore suburbs. Add in companies like Morgan Stanley, Under Amour, McCormick Spices and Stanley Black-and-Decker...there's work to be found in Baltimore!
4. Rich History and Cultural Scene
Baltimore is a cultural gem with a rich history and vibrant arts scene. The city is home to numerous museums, theaters, and historical sites. Visit the Inner Harbor for its stunning waterfront views and attractions like the National Aquarium. Explore the rich history at Fort McHenry, or enjoy a performance at the Hippodrome Theatre. Baltimore’s neighborhoods each have their own unique charm, from the historic Fells Point to the artsy Station North.
5. Delicious Culinary Scene
Food lovers will feel right at home in Baltimore. The city’s culinary scene is diverse and exciting, offering everything from fresh seafood (don’t miss the famous Maryland crabs) to trendy food markets and gourmet restaurants. I'm still waiting for Top Chef to come do a season in our thriving restaurant town as I think our city competes with some of the best! Whether you’re grabbing a bite at a local food truck or dining at a high-end restaurant, Baltimore’s food scene will satisfy all your culinary cravings.
6. Friendly Communities
Baltimore is known for its friendly and welcoming communities. The city’s diverse population and neighborhood-centric vibe make it easy to feel at home. Whether you’re moving with a family, as a young professional, or as a retiree, you’ll find a community that fits your lifestyle. Baltimore’s residents take pride in their city and are always ready to show newcomers what makes Charm City so special. Don't know where to start in your search? Baltimore Magazine created a wonderful Neighborhood Guide to get you started! And if that's not enough, I'm a certified Live Baltimore agent and have even done tours of various neighborhoods as part of their always-fun Baltimore Trolley Tour.
